Arbitrarily, the supreme court judges of Brazil are silencing and arresting people, altering and violating constitutional laws, invading powers of state institutions, disrespecting an elected President with 57 million votes and persecuting parliamentarians and state ministers.
Judges who change laws, challenge people, principles and institutions, such as freedom of expression, the legal system and parliamentarians, one after the other, “drop by drop”, gradually concentrating power in their own hands. Often, this weakening of rules and norms happens so gradually that people don’t notice. (a good analogy is that of a frog that doesn’t realize that the water is heating up until it’s cooked).
Even with the benefit of hindsight, it is difficult to identify the specific point at which a country entered the dictatorship. It is even more difficult for politicians, the media and the general public – observing in real time – to call for the dismantling of a democracy, resulting in the lack of mass demonstrations in defense of that democracy and its freedoms. When the alarm is finally triggered, it may be too late. Consequently, it is dangerous to give way to apparently false democratic principles, especially in a weak and corrupt system like Brazil’s and even when the leaders who started the process never intended to carry out a coup.

Os Juízes que alteram as leis, desafiam pessoas, princípios e instituições, como liberdade de expressão, sistema legal e parlamentares, assim um após o outro, “de maneira gota a gota”, concentrando gradualmente o poder em suas próprias mãos. Muitas vezes, esse enfraquecimento de regras e normas acontece tão gradualmente que as pessoas não notam. (uma boa analogia é a do sapo que não percebe que a água está esquentando até que fique cozido).
Mesmo com o benefício da retrospectiva, é difícil identificar o ponto específico em que um país entrou na ditadura. É ainda mais difícil para os políticos, a mídia e o público em geral – observando em tempo real – convocar o desmantelamento de uma democracia, resultando na falta de manifestações em massa em defesa dessa democracia e de suas liberdades.
Quando o alarme é finalmente acionado, pode ser tarde demais. Consequentemente, é perigoso ceder terreno a princípios democráticos aparentemente falsos, principalmente em um sistema débil e corrupto como o do Brasil e mesmo quando os líderes que iniciaram o processo nunca pretendiam executar um golpe de estado.
